What do + and - mean in betting odds?+
The minus number is how much u risk to win $100: -150 means risk $150 to win $100, so it's the favorite. The plus number is how much u win on a $100 bet: +150 means a $100 bet wins $150, so it's the underdog. Our
odds converter turns any price into the win % it implies.
What's a moneyline bet?+
U're just picking who wins the game. No points involved. Favorites pay less, underdogs pay more, and the price tells u how likely the book thinks each side is.
What's a point spread?+
The spread evens out a game by giving points to the underdog. Bills -6.5 means Buffalo has to win by 7 or more; the other side +6.5 cashes if they lose by 6 or less, or win outright.
What does -110 mean, and what's the vig?+
-110 means u risk $110 to win $100. That extra $10 is the vig (or juice), the book's cut. It's why u need to win about 52.4% of ur -110 bets just to break even. Winning half isn't enough.
What does +EV (EV+) mean?+
EV is expected value: what a bet is worth on average if u could make it a thousand times. A +EV bet is one where the price pays MORE than the real odds deserve. Example: if a side truly wins 55% of the time, it's worth about -122, so getting it at -110 is +EV. U'll still lose plenty of +EV bets, but over hundreds of them the math is on ur side.
How do u find +EV bets?+
U compare the book's price to the fair price. The fair price comes from a model or from the sharpest books in the market with the vig taken out (that's called devigging). When a book is slow to move or hangs a soft number, that gap is the edge. It's exactly how our player props get picked.
Should I parlay or bet singles?+
Singles, most of the time. A parlay only cashes if every leg hits, and the book's edge stacks on every leg u add, so the more legs, the worse ur long-run math. Parlays are fine for a small fun bet. Build ur bankroll on straight bets.
What's a teaser?+
A teaser is a parlay where u move the spread in ur favor, usually 6 points in football, for a lower payout. A 6-point, two-team NFL teaser usually pays around -120. Both legs still have to win.
When should I use a teaser?+
Almost only in the NFL, and only when the 6 points move the line through 3 and 7, the two most common winning margins. That's the Wong teaser: underdogs at +1.5 to +2.5 (they become +7.5 to +8.5) and favorites at -7.5 to -8.5 (they become -1.5 to -2.5). At -120 each leg needs to win about 74% of the time, and those spots have historically cleared that. Teasing totals, or teasing NBA spreads, is usually just paying extra juice.
What's a unit?+
A unit is ur standard bet size, set as a slice of ur bankroll. Talking in units instead of dollars lets anyone compare results, whether they bet $5 or $500. When we say +5.3u, that's 5.3 of ur standard bets in profit.
How much should my unit be?+
1 to 3% of the money u set aside for betting, and 2% is where most people should sit. Ten losses in a row happens to good bettors, and at 2% that stings without wrecking u. Plug ur bankroll into our
unit sizer and it does the math.
How much should I bet on each game?+
One unit, every time. Flat sizing is BORING and it works: betting more on the games u "feel" is how a good month turns into a bad one. Never bet money u need for rent, bills or food.
What's a normal ROI, and how do I know if I'm doing good?+
Most casual bettors lose money over time because of the vig. Long term, 2 to 5% ROI is genuinely good, 1 to 2% is still profitable, and anything over 10% almost never lasts. Judge urself after a few hundred bets, not a weekend, and track units, not wins: going 55% at -110 beats going 60% on heavy favorites.
What's a prop bet?+
A bet on something inside the game instead of the final score, like a player's strikeouts, points or receiving yards, usually as over or under a line. Player props are most of what we post on HardRock.
What's a push?+
A tie with the line. If u take -3 and the team wins by exactly 3, the bet pushes and u get ur stake back. That's why half-point lines like -2.5 or -3.5 matter so much in football.
What is line shopping?+
Checking the same bet at more than one book and taking the best price. -105 instead of -115 on every bet adds up to real money over a season. It's the easiest edge in betting.
Can u actually make money betting sports?+
Some people do, most don't. The ones who win treat it like a numbers game: flat units, real prices, a record they keep honestly, and the patience to judge results over hundreds of bets. Nobody wins every night, and anyone who says they do is selling something.
Is sports betting legal where I live?+
It depends on ur state. Sports betting is legal in a lot of states but not all, and the age is 21 in most of them. Check ur state's rules before u sign up anywhere.
